Museums
Krakow is the town full of works of art and souvenir from the past. Plenty of them you can see just walking around the streets and squares. If you want to know the others you must visit museums which are about fifty in Krakow. Collections delight their wealth and variety. Everybody can find something for themselves, as well as lover of old paintings and photography like fans of old plane or shells collectors. I will point out only a few of them, the finest example of Polish art and culture.
Museums
The mother of Krakow museums - The Muzeum Narodowe has today a few branches located in different parts of the town.
*National Museum, al. 3 Maja 1, open Tue, Wed, Thu and Sun 10-15.30, Fri, Sat 10-18, Closed Monday
This slightly forbidding looking building from the 1930's is the main headquarters of National Museum. There are some great permanent exhibitions of wide selection of polish painting and sculptures from the 1890's and beyond. The turn-of-the-twentieth century Młoda Polska movement is particularly well represented here, with a number of notable works by Wyspiański, as well as a number of other major Polish artist including Mehoffer, Witkiewicz and Slewiński. The museum also presents a diverse range of roving exhibitions, some of them important national culture events, so it's always worth checking what's on in the local listings (The permanent collection of late nineteenth and twentieth century Polish painting is currently closed for renovation).
Another essential stop off of any Młoda Polska Tour of Krakow is the Muzeum Wyspiańskiego.
*Wyspiański Museum, ul.Szczepańska11 ,Tue-Fri 11-18, Sat, Sun 10-15.30, free on Sun
We can admire over there a fascinating collection of work relating to, one of Poland's finest artists Stanislaw Wyspiański. His interest was not limited only to painting, he could turn his hand to poetry, play writing, costume design, furniture design and stained-glass. The finest example of the most stained glass windows is God the Creator which he made for The Franciscan Church in Wszystkich Swiętych square.
The Period Młoda Polska is one of the prolific in Polish Art.
