Highlights of Krakow

 |
The heart of Krakow is the Stare Miasto, the Old Town, it is originated over one thousand years ago. Surrounded by the belt of parkland known as the Planty which replaced the medieval walls. But you can still admire the remaining northern section of these walls with a main gate, three towers and a bastion. Along the network of streets planned in 1257 are situated the most important and spectacular monuments of Krakow-almost every building has a few hundred years of history. The Rynek (Main Square) is the focal point, with half an hour's walk of it.
On the south edge of Old Town, arise on the hill, the Wawel - the wonderful castle and cathedral - one of the most striking royal residence in Europe whose first settlement dates back to the eighth century. Beyond the Wawel stretches the old Jewish quarter of Kazimierz, the separate town in its beginnings, with lovely streets and places, pre-war atmosphere and monuments of Jewish culture. Just behind the river Wis³a (vistula) is another interesting quarter of Krakow-Podgórze with remains of wartime ghetto.
Krakow is not only a witness of ancient times, in the suburbs just 20 minutes by tram from The Old Town, after The World War II, the communists built the ideal socialist city-Nowa Huta.
This guide will get you familiar with the most interesting attractions in Krakow.
